Operators in this corpus do not agree on a hard unit-count floor, a hard employee-count floor, a hard drive-time radius, whether a mediocre first yes is acceptable, which of the “big three” types to chase first, or whether phone/email counts as real outreach. Those disagreements stay on this page. Do not collapse them into one rule.
Current doctrine

Before you spend money
Do I buy the machine first?
No. Current doctrine from Anthony, Mike, and Hoffman.
- Qualify the property with the filters on this page.
- Measure the space and the full path from outdoor drop-off to the final spot.
- Get a signed agreement, the exact spot, access hours, and an out clause.
- Choose the product mix and machine type for that site.
- Then buy the matching machine.

Mike’s operator rule: location dictates equipment. Equipment never dictates location. No exceptions. Top 5 Beginner Vending Mistakes
Anthony’s pre-spend qualify list: signed contract, high foot traffic, captive audience, no convenient alternatives nearby, and you know which machine type that site needs. If those are true, he treats install as math, not a gamble. If they are not true, do not buy yet. The Best Strategy To Buy Your First Vending Machine In 2026
Warning
Beginners commonly finance a machine, take delivery, and still have nowhere to put it. Anthony said 70% of solo vending businesses fail in the first 18 months because they start backwards (July 10, 2026). That figure is his claim. He also said unused machines often sit in a garage for six months, and used $6,000 as an example cost of a machine bought too early (February 20, 2026). Tim and Ben worked the location process while equipment was already on about a 30-day order clock (From Out of Work to $90K/Month, April 7, 2026). Anthony’s later rule is stricter: signed contract before spending a dollar (The Best Strategy To Buy Your First Vending Machine In 2026, February 20, 2026). Hoffman’s first-machine story also starts with a location, then a financed purchase (I made $3,571 today while playing golf, here’s how). Do not collapse those into one rule.
Hoffman is the exception anecdote, not the current rule: he got the yes at luxury athlete housing before he knew where to buy a machine. I Quit My Job, Then Started A $50k/Mo Vending Machine Business

What if I already want a specific brand?
Start from the site’s volume and type, not a favorite brand. Match machine quality to throughput. Mike’s examples (November 7, 2025): do not put a high-end expensive machine in a low-throughput urgent care open five days a week seeing about 50 patients; a high-throughput apartment of about 700 units / 900 people can justify high-end machines. Anthony’s later add-on: traffic alone is not enough. Why Starting Vending Solo Might Be a Mistake (And What to Do Instead)

How do I score a site before I spend money?
Anthony’s five capital-protection filters
Use these on every live prospect. Later version dated April 24, 2026 in Say No to Most Vending Locations. Same five also appear in How to Start a Vending Business (with ZERO Experience) (July 7, 2026).
- Daily physical presence. Warm bodies actually in the building every day, with wallets. Not capacity, payroll, or units on paper.
- Traffic concentration. Natural choke points and forced exposure, not open campus space. Machines perform in choke points, not open space.
- Traffic rhythm. Strength of each shift, not just “we have multiple shifts.” Two strong shifts is good. Three strong shifts is elite. A claim like 75 on first, 25 on second, and 12 on third is one strong shift with leftovers.
- Low substitutability. Leaving is inconvenient or time-consuming.
- Verified demand. Ask real users what they would buy.
If it scores high across all five, proceed. If it fails two, pass with no emotion. A single failed filter is Not specified in the corpus, except weak daily presence: he says nothing else saves the location. Say No to Most Vending Locations
200 people physically present every day can beat 700 people on paper. How to Start a Vending Business (with ZERO Experience)
Presence questions by type:
- Office: “How many hours are actually in office?”
- Warehouse: “How many per shift?”
- Residential: “What is the true occupancy?”
- Medical: daily patient volume and staff
- Count buyers, not doors
Verified-demand question: “If you put a machine here, would you actually buy?” If three out of five mention energy drinks, stock energy drinks. If no one mentions snacks, do not guess and stock snacks anyway. He says this is the filter most rookies skip. Say No to Most Vending Locations

- Prefer closer accounts; his manufacturing-type stops are within about 15 minutes of home
- Stop chasing every apartment the way he did in year one

“Take a mediocre first yes to learn” (Andy, Jesse, early Matt) conflicts with “wait for the right type and placement” (Anthony, Manuel, DJ, Evan, Sandy, Joe). Both are in the corpus. Quality-after-yes still applies: do not skip filters just because you need a win.

- Medical outpatient: high-stress waiting plus staff on long shifts
- Corporate offices with multiple tenants sharing a lobby and break rooms

Anthony later told beginners to concentrate on apartment buildings of 200 units plus, outpatient medical, shelters, manufacturing / warehouse facilities with 150 to 200-plus employees, schools, and packed parking lots that stay full at different hours, five to seven days a week. Those size cuts are Anthony’s, from How I’d Build A Vending Machine Business From $0 (December 26, 2025).

Anthony (July 7, 2026): How to Start a Vending Business (with ZERO Experience)
- Map the network before cold calling: who you, family, and friends know at offices, car dealerships, gyms, medical facilities, schools, warehouses, manufacturing plants, property-management companies, apartment complexes, and hotels.
- Use a warm introduction when you have one. One warm introduction is worth more than 10 cold walk-ins, per Anthony (July 7, 2026).
- After the network, look at overlooked sites such as manufacturing plants. Most people are not fighting over them. They can have multiple shifts and a consistent need for food and drinks.
- Open Vent Scout and search manufacturing plants, warehouses, medical offices, urgent cares, car dealerships, gyms, hotels, and apartment complexes.
- Prioritize big buildings, full parking lots, and other signs of daily activity.

- If a roommate works with dealerships, ask for a GM meeting.
- If a sister works at the YMCA, use that introduction.
- If you work in a multi-floor office, pitch the property manager on a smart machine in the shared lobby.

- Pick one market.
- Type a place type plus the city (manufacturing plants, medical offices, YMCA-type locations, sports complexes, apartment complexes, schools, universities, batting cages).

- Write down the phone number.
- Open the website, find Contact Us or listed emails.

- Manufacturing: HR, framed as an employee benefit
- Medical: employees and patients; use medical and HR emails if listed
- University: food and beverage
- Schools: healthier items for kids plus revenue share to booster clubs
- If a sports listing has no website, skip to one that does

How to run them
Tom: walk in, introduce yourself as a local operator, say the amenity is complimentary and you can offer options, and frame it as a partnership. Look for unserviced, turned off, or unplugged machines and offer to take over. He said this produced a few locations within his first 60 days; that is his result, not a timeline. Lane: after months of studying and no locations, he stopped waiting to feel like an expert, took a flyer and cards, walked in, and treated it as a conversation. Jason’s first garden-style machine did about $100 a month and was “horrendous”; they left it 3–6 months until they had somewhere else to put it. Matt Dix still took a Graystar garden-style stop he did not really want because the relationship seemed worth it, then planned to reassess after summer pool-season data. He Risked Everything… Now It’s $20K/Month
Ask:
- “Is there one elevator bank?”
- “Where do the packages get delivered?”
- “Are there any stores within walking distance?”
- “Where’s the most foot traffic in the building? Is it by the package room? Is it in the amenity lounge area?”
- “What is the true occupancy?”
Decision-makers Mike names: property manager, regional manager, asset manager.
In-building apartment spots (Mr. Passive): Vending Machine Placements So Good, They Feel ILLEGAL
- Do not install in the laundry room. If that is the only allowed spot, walk away. Users are task-focused, may visit weekly or every two weeks, and are often counting quarters for washers.
- Prefer mailbox / package area (daily stops, often after work, social).
- Consider the gym (he claims about 3x laundry-room revenue from what they have seen).
- Pool only if it is not seasonal and not miserably hot or cold (he cites 1.5x to 2x laundry-room revenue when it is not seasonal).
- Watch whether residents use the main lobby or a garage side door. Place on the real path. Use both doors if both are real.
Lane: do not automatically accept an unused clubhouse. Push for elevators, main entrance, and package room. He said that combination in a 100-unit building regularly did about $3,000 and peaked at $4,000 in a month. Anthony said the same kind of site in an unused clubhouse can do about $400 a month or less (April 28, 2026). He Had No Sales Experience… Now It's $200K/Year
John’s 150-unit “Beast” (observed traits, not a formula): little around the property, machine right outside the elevators, prior vending always empty, overnight 8 p.m.–3 a.m. about 40% of sales, mix of ages including older residents who do not drive. He cited daily run rates often $275–$300 and sometimes over $400, and $9,500–$10,000 a month. Both men treated that as an outlier. Anthony’s own 199-unit only averages about $1,800–$2,100 a month. Anthony’s amenity / NOI talking points (attributed, unverified): leasing agents can show it as a luxury perk; he cites a study from “last year” that a convenience-store or vending option inside the building equates to $54 in premium rent per unit (January 9, 2026). Mike’s attributed residential revenue bands (not promises): underperforming about $1,200 a month; average $2,000–$3,000; strong $3,500–$5,000. Manufacturing, warehouses, and labor shops
Repeated as overlooked, high-need, multi-shift, and easier to work with than they look. Mike: they are grateful, do not need anything fancy, and they buy a lot. Must-haves (Mike, March 27, 2026): 150-plus employees; two strong shifts minimum; three are ideal; controlled break windows; limited ability to leave. Top 3 Vending Locations — These Are All You Need
Anthony’s stated minimum: 150 employees. At that size he wants a micro market in the employee break room. This Is Boring, But These Vending Locations Do $3K–$5K a Month
What kills it (Mike): one single shift; a gas station across the street; machines hidden from seating; poor visibility.
On-site check:
- Check the parking lot at shift change.
- See whether the lot is full.
Ask:
- “How many employees per shift?”
- “Are breaks staggered or are they fixed?”
- How stable is the company, how are they doing, are they hiring or growing, are they opening a new division?
Decision-makers Mike names: operations manager, plant manager, facilities director. If that person oversees multiple sites, ask about additional buildings so one placement can turn into three.
Pitch frame: keep workers on site during a short break. Anthony’s version: about a 15-minute break, about a five-minute walk to the break room, grab food and drinks, get back on shift. Especially useful in industrial areas with limited nearby food. This Is Boring, But These Vending Locations Do $3K–$5K a Month
Why they can work: multiple shifts, short breaks, hard to leave, overnight hunger. Madison’s cash-cow plant: about 250 people most of the year, back can hit about 130 degrees, most workers rideshare or take transit so lunch is not walkable. She first called it 24/7, then corrected to 24/5, closed weekends. Anthony described a similar plant that called him after Coke machines went unrestocked over 60 days: three shifts, 24/5, breakfast / dinner / midnight crews through the same area. Mike’s attributed warehouse revenue bands (not promises): weak about $1,500 a month; solid $3,000–$5,000; $5,000-plus is high-volume and assumes multiple machines. In the April 2025 video he separately says average revenue per machine in big multi-shift warehouses can be upwards of $5,000 a month. High-volume warehouse numbers are often multiple machines, not one cabinet. Before buying robust equipment for an office that asked for a micro market: Match equipment size to location hours and risk
- Go meet the location and learn the actual operating pattern.
- Ask or observe whether they work from home on Fridays, only work 9 to 5, and whether they work weekends.
- If the only sales window is 9 to 5 Monday through Thursday, do not buy a robust set.
- Start with one hybrid combo: half drinks, half snacks.
- If that machine crushes it, add a second machine later.
- Always pick machinery based on location type and the foot traffic that will justify it.

Office placement conflict: Mr. Passive says do not default to the break room; put the machine in the elevator lobby. He claims break-room machines do about 50% less and that moving to the elevator lobby doubled office revenue. People in break rooms often already brought lunch. Mike, separately, lists break rooms as impulse spots when willpower is lowest, and offices as places for energy drinks / matcha at the 2 p.m. crash, phone chargers, and winter OTC meds. Hotels
Hotel amenity pitch is above. Tom’s long-cycle hotel: franchisee-owned national brand, about 400 beds, just outside a metro. Personal direct mail to decision makers, then months of non-harassing follow-up, then GM, then owner. Many major hotels are franchisee-owned, so the on-site GM or director of operations may not be the final decision maker. Direct mail is, in his words, extremely expensive and usually a low return. His deal took the better part of six months of back-and-forth and more than a year overall. They had planned 3 machines and installed 4. Hotel cut: 15% of gross. Restock about every other day. Price higher than a normal location. Early weekends were over $1,000 a day across four machines; later slow-season run rate $500–$700 a day. If the hotel already runs an open lobby micromarket: pitch replacing staffed checkout (front desk ringing up low-dollar snacks during check-in) and cutting easy lobby theft.
Javier replaced an ongoing hotel open market in Texas and used a Pepsi-only brand restriction the incumbent could not support. First month about $8,500. Property management then introduced other properties. His speed depended on an existing connection. $8,500 First Month… His FIRST Location
Mike names hotels as the traditional-vending location type besides a generic high-traffic site, and as a smart-machine/micro-market target. Place hotel machines next to elevators, not mid-hallway. Chargers and lobby convenience; smart machine if a bulky unit would be an eyesore; micro market if the lobby coffee shop closes mid-morning. 10 Passive Income Ideas To Pay Your Rent In 2025 · Vending Machine Placements So Good, They Feel ILLEGAL · I Sell $2 Phone Chargers For $15 (And People Thank Me) · The Best Passive Income Opportunity Of 2025 (Even If You're Lazy)
Medical: urgent care, hospitals, specialty buildings, pet hospitals
Mike would rather put a smart cooler in an urgent care with 90-minute to two-hour waits than fight a hospital lobby the big player already owns. Audit every urgent care and every medical office building tied to a hospital. If the hospital cafeteria/ER already has a big-player micro market, check specialty buildings (his example: cardiology) so staff are not walking a skywalk and down several floors. He bets that walk is true nine times out of ten. Why You Shouldn't Start a Vending Business In 2025
His urgent-care close: cold-email the CEO with the exact lobby experience (his: wife sick, two hours, no water fountain), say they need a smart machine, and commit to an install window (he used two weeks). Same video.
Mike’s must-haves: steady patient flow; visible waiting-area placement; staff nearby. What kills it: hidden placement, fast turnover, easy access to a cafeteria. Top 3 Vending Locations — These Are All You Need
Anthony’s “you are set up” stats: packed parking lot, about 150 employees plus at least 100 patients a day, or about 250 people flowing through daily. Mr. Passive’s version: after the doctor says it is the flu, patients can go downstairs for DayQuil or NyQuil instead of Walgreens. The Most Overlooked $10k/Mo Business You Can Start (With AI)
Mr. Passive in hospitals: emergency waiting room first (long waits, 24/7, overnight premiums). Do not place next to the cafeteria. Use department-adjacent staff spots, overnight access around 3 a.m., and outpatient waiting areas where families cannot leave. Avoid corridors that feel employees-only. Vending Machine Placements So Good, They Feel ILLEGAL
Mike also groups pet hospitals with urgent cares: wait-time traffic, stressed buyers, 24/7 or seven-day access, staff energy-drink sales, typically minimal revenue-share if you stock it. He prefers a weekend-open urgent care as seven days of sales, versus an office where people work remote Monday and Friday. For security he prefers 24/7 activity such as a vet hospital or overnight urgent care, because people and witnesses stay around the machine. Sandy’s first location was a middle-school teachers’ lounge (48 teachers) that appeared because her son’s excitement came up in an already-scheduled principal meeting. “All the good locations are taken” is treated in this corpus as fear of action, not a market fact. Existing old-school machines are framed as upgrade inventory. Where inside the building should the machine go?

- Place the machine on the floor and in the spot where that traffic will see it.
- Do not accept “we’ll figure out where it goes later.”

Indoor vs outdoor, and security around the spot
Mike treats location choice as your first offense, and says it has to be focused on the security around where the machine will sit. The EASIEST Ways To Prevent Theft In Your Vending Business
Placement he wants:
- Put the machine inside a locked building, not outside near the pool.
- Place it near security cameras.
- Place it in a well-lit, high-traffic area such as the lobby.
- Stay out of back corners and basements where a thief can exit quickly.
- Prefer a lobby near a visible security desk or management office.
- Prioritize properties that already have on-site security. He calls those gold.
He also wants a property relationship that watches the machine:
- Build a strong relationship with property management so they are encouraged to watch over it.

- He says relationships with the property will prevent more theft than any camera you put up.
Spots he says not to use: dead zones with no traffic; outside near the pool; back corners or basements with a quick exit; unlocked apartment-complex laundry room; outdoor spots with no lighting; anywhere with broken windows or graffiti; places where locals say “be careful here.”
Mike’s layered protection list, where location is layer 2: smart machine, good location, physical security, monitoring systems, insurance and documentation.
On claims: if you had no security measures, cannot prove forced entry, or placed the machine in a high-crime spot the insurer would never approve, he says expect the claim to be denied. That is his insurance warning, not California-specific legal advice. San Diego or California placement, permit, or insurance rules: Not specified in the corpus.
Warning
Anthony lists a weatherproof outdoor machine as the fit for a pool area, park, outdoor rec, or anywhere the machine cannot be inside. Mike, in the theft video, says do not use an outside-near-the-pool spot. Both instructions are in the corpus. Do not pretend they agree. Unused amenity lounges are a conflict too. Anthony: unused clubhouses are a red flag. Mike: unused amenity lounges are a pitch — a nice machine gives residents a reason to enter rooms that collect dust.
Radius, clustering, and which market to work
There is no single radius rule.

Buying a route instead of building every stop
If you are buying cash flow rather than only hunting:
- Search Biz Buy Sell, Facebook Marketplace, and similar marketplaces for vending routes or single locations.
- Check traditional business brokers.
- Check Vend Hub’s routes-for-sale section.
- For off-market: pick a city, search “vending” on Google Maps / Google Business, email or call, and ask if they would sell for the right price. If yes, ask about seller financing.
- If a seller has one stop in your town, ask: “Do you have other locations you're trying to sell? If so, I might be interested in those as well.”
- After buying, introduce yourself to a local machine supplier and start buying machines from them. Tell the supplier: if they know anybody looking to get out, give that person your number.
Using “Buy Now, Pay Later” To Buy A Vending Machine Business · How He Scaled to 500+ Vending Machines by Buying Routes
Mike treats older operators around 70 who talk about retirement income as probably open to seller financing. He says baby-boomer Pepsi/Coke-era routes are coming up; typical equipment is old coil machines with limited motors. Treat those as the cheap asset you buy for the location, then plan to swap hardware if you want higher tickets.
Mike’s buy-vs-build screen: listings often come in around 0.7x to 1x of annual revenue; he walks if the ask is above 1x. During diligence, meet the clients yourself; watch for a strong stop that is about to go away (his example: a hotel about to bring the lobby market in-house). Should You Build or Buy A Vending Machine Route?
Mike’s personal hybrid: buy to jump-start a remote city, build with pop-ins where he lives in Oregon, then buy more once infrastructure exists.
Mr. Passive’s diligence on a listed route: monthly revenue and implied multiple, revenue per location (he wanted about $2K on four stops), weekly labor hours, machine age, depreciation, seller financing and why they are exiting, whether the business is owner-centric, seller will introduce you to every decision maker and stay involved after close, sister-property map, value-add such as adding a freezer. He paid $96,000 for a four-location route doing $8,000 a month, which he treated as 1x revenue (July 11, 2025). These “boring” machines make me $80k/mo, here's how
Jesse bought a neglected 18-drink-machine route whose owner’s other business had taken off. Seller held paper for 5 years after a bank turndown. Jesse called stumbling onto that deal luck and said others should not assume they can copy it. The route was doing $7,000 a month before he optimized it (December 16, 2025). What His First 30 Days in Vending Really Looked Like
Jason says you may pay a little more than the machines are worth, but you get locations and cash flow with basically no prospecting. Current pull rule
Anthony’s current wait is 90 days / three months. If it is still not performing, take it out and relocate it. He used to wait six months. Steps:

If the building previously had vending in that same spot, Anthony treats roughly month six, plus or minus 5%, as the run-rate to expect. If it never had vending, wait about 10 to 12 months for the building to get conditioned before using that plus-or-minus-5% monthly expectation. Months Without a Single Vending Location...
DJ also scores the fleet per machine, not only per location, because multi-machine sites hide weak units. His baseline: about $1,500 revenue per machine per month. Some units can sit a little below if others are far above and the fleet average holds. That is his standard, not a guarantee. How He Built a $50,000/Month Vending Business in One Year
Same people and traffic can produce different revenue after a machine change. Anthony’s example: $1,200 vs $2,500 a month, only the machine changed. Same Location... Double the Vending Revenue?

- John / Anthony: 150 units can be an outlier beast; 199 units can be average. Can You Start Vending at 60? Ask This Former Real Estate Agent
Shared ground: traffic path and substitutes matter more than the number on the brochure. Anthony also argues a 300-unit high-rise with one lobby can beat a 700-unit garden.
Warning
Spoken minimums got jumbled once. Anthony once said 200 units for a residential apartment and then “150 people in a manufacturing residential building” before later separating manufacturing/warehouse (150 employees) from apartments (200 units). Use the separated version. This Is Boring, But These Vending Locations Do $3K–$5K a Month
Customer-pool cutoffs
Mike-for-Anthony: do not target under 100-plus potential customers (November 14, 2025). Shannon passed a WeWork with about 100 people (January 13, 2026). Anthony’s later list is larger still for some types. Hoffman rejects a 20-employee dealership. How to count “100 plus potential customers”: Not specified in the corpus.
Nearby retail
Angelina prioritizes buildings with nothing around them. Mike still considers a building a 5-minute walk from food because people are impulsive. Anthony’s 60-second substitute rule says easy alternatives make the site less valuable. All three remain.
First yes quality
Wait for the right site (Anthony, Manuel, DJ, Evan, Sandy, Joe, later John Sanchez) vs take a mediocre first site to learn (Andy, Jesse, early Matt). This also conflicts with the equally repeated “go knock on doors now” rule.
Which of the “big three” is first
Mike April 30, 2025 ranks medical, then apartments/senior, then warehouses. Mike March 27, 2026 would start with warehouses, centralized residential, and outpatient medical, and would bet warehouses if he could pick only one. Anthony’s beginner list adds multi-tenant offices and uses 200-unit / 150-employee minimums.
Apartments vs manufacturing as the spine
John is staying in apartments unless something changes. Madison’s Q1 rocks after manufacturing worked: more manufacturing plus student housing. Manuel rebuilt 2026 around manufacturing-like potential, not every apartment. Anthony says stay agile: you may plan one property type and then find manufacturing fits logistics better. Matt Morrison targeted apartments because that matched the group. Can You Start Vending at 60? Ask This Former Real Estate Agent · She’s Doing $10-12K a Month With Just 6 Vending Locations
Break rooms and unused lounges
- Mr. Passive: office break room is a trap; elevator lobby is the spot.
- Mike: break rooms catch people at low willpower.
- Anthony: unused clubhouses are a red flag.
- Mike: unused amenity lounges are a pitch.
Opening words
Do not say “vending” / “machine” (Anthony, Mike) vs ask “do you currently have vending?” (John) vs “I’m a local operator… complimentary options” (Tom).
Phone and email versus pop-ins only
Mike: phone, email/form, and pop-in on every lead (January 13, 2025). Matt: emails and phone calls never work; walk in. Mr. Passive: use ChatGPT lists and amenity emails instead of cold-calling 100 properties. Jason: daytime cold calling was not worth it; buy routes. Overlap: nobody in this batch says sit and wait for inbound Google leads. Face-to-face is the overlapping instruction.
Conversion math
Anthony’s 40 / 10 / 4 / 1 outreach funnel, Anthony’s 1-in-10 pop-in close, Mike’s 3-in-10 once the pitch is refined, Michael Deese’s 6–8 month handshake-to-contract cycle, and Jason’s “hundreds of calls, a couple of leads” cannot be averaged into one rate.
Garden apartments
Anthony: hard pass. Mike: avoid. Jason: first one did about $100 a month. Matt and Mallorie still took weak or 55-plus / garden-style Graystar stops to protect or open a management relationship, then reassessed or used them as a door-opener.
Dealerships
Anthony names dealerships as an early placement mistake and a vanity-site warning. Mike still tells beginners to use a friend to get a dealership GM meeting.
Existing machines
Mike: old Coke/Pepsi means they already understand the amenity. Musa: existing machines are a lead source because many operators under-serve. Mike also says the market is saturated with old-school machines and that is an opening for smart equipment.
Scoring rules have holes
Mike: pass under 30, investigate over 32; 30–32 unspecified. Anthony: proceed if high on all five filters, walk if it fails two; a single fail is unspecified, except weak daily presence, which he says nothing else saves.
Buy a route versus build with pop-ins
Jason stopped door-knocking once acquisitions were available. Mr. Passive argues buying gets you to scale faster. Mike builds with pop-ins where he lives and bought to jump-start a remote city. Most other operators in this batch still treat pop-ins as the job.
When to spend on equipment
Anthony: signed contract before spending a dollar (February 20, 2026). Tim: work locations while equipment is on a ~30-day order clock (April 7, 2026). Mike’s first-machine story also starts with a location, then a financed purchase (June 12, 2025).
Trial length before you move a machine
60-day contract out (Mike, Anthony) vs 90-day review (Mike, current Anthony) vs 90–120-day performance trial (DJ, Anthony). Old Anthony rule: wait six months. Current Anthony rule, repeated into 2026: 90 days / three months. Theft walk-aways have no 90-day clock.
Outdoor pool / park sites
Anthony: use a weatherproof outdoor machine when the machine cannot be inside. Mike: do not use an outside-near-the-pool spot; put the machine inside a locked building.
Sunday
Use Sunday as a parking-lot traffic test. Do not plan Sunday apartment property-manager visits.
How hard is finding vs closing?
Anthony (February 13, 2026): leads are not the hardest part; closing is. Jesse: even with C-store experience, the hard part of getting in was finding a location. Use These Negotiation Tactics, They’ll Blow Up Your Vending Business · What His First 30 Days in Vending Really Looked Like
Markets look different
Anthony (Chicago) and Mike (Oregon) say locations, pricing, competition, and even the foot-traffic metric you prioritize can look extremely different. Copy fundamentals, not someone else’s exact location type. Anthony’s late-night winter walk to the convenience store is a Chicago example, not a San Diego climate rule.
