Choose and buy the machine

Choose and buy the machine

The machine is a relocatable asset. It is not the business. Do not buy a cabinet because it looks cool, because a website is on sale, or because buying one makes you feel like you have started.

Current doctrine

The most recent and most repeated rule is: lock a real location first, get the agreement signed, then buy the smallest new machine that actually fits that site. Anthony, Mike Kaufman, and Angelina (19 Aug 2026) all treat “everyone asks about the machine first” as the beginner mistake. How to Buy Your First Vending Machine (Step-by-Step Process) (24 Jul 2026) restates it as process: choose the machine after you understand the location.

Current teaching, in order:

  1. No signed contract, no machine. Do not purchase a pile of equipment with nowhere to put it. Start a Vending Business in 90 Days | Complete Roadmap (10 Jul 2026); From Laid Off to Replacing Their Salaries With Vending. Here's How (Step by Step) (19 Aug 2026).
  2. The location picks the cabinet. Traffic, hours, access, theft risk, and whether the property cares how it looks decide the format. Equipment never dictates location. Top 5 Beginner Vending Mistakes; How to Buy Your First Vending Machine (Step-by-Step Process) (24 Jul 2026).
  3. Prefer new equipment with a real warranty unless you personally know how to vet cooling, parts, and modern payments on a used cabinet. The repeated 2025–2026 stack indoors is cashless, remote inventory, and a glass front or locked smart cooler. 10 HUGE Mistakes New Vending Machines Owners Make; Don't Start A Vending Machine Business, Until You Watch This....
  4. Do not drain cash to own the box free-and-clear on day one if that leaves you unable to buy inventory, insurance, or the next stop. Several operators finance the cabinet, then pay the note down from cash flow. 10 HUGE Mistakes New Vending Machines Owners Make (5 Jul 2025). Mike also says he will never tell someone they must take on debt. Hold both lines; see Conflicts.
  5. Do not over-equip an unproven stop. One live combo or one matched cabinet first. Do not start with a drink machine plus a snack machine, a roughly $30,000 micro-market set, or four cabinets in a garage. 10 HUGE Mistakes New Vending Machines Owners Make.
  6. The cheapest invoice is not the cheapest machine if it creates downtime, weak support, or slow parts. Ask warranty, delivery, install, damage-on-arrival, monthly software, support, and parts speed before you order. How to Buy Your First Vending Machine (Step-by-Step Process) (24 Jul 2026).

Warning

Mike Kaufman calls buying the machine before the location the most common beginner mistake. A common failure path is financing a machine, taking delivery, and still having no place to put it. Anthony says people who buy three or four machines first often end up with them sitting in the garage.

What you do

1. Confirm you are allowed to buy yet

2. Walk the site and write what the cabinet must do

Do not buy a robust set from a phone description. Go meet the location. 10 HUGE Mistakes New Vending Machines Owners Make.

  1. Walk the site in person. Bring a tape measure and phone photos of more than one machine size so you can show how a compact unit fits a tight alcove. Use These Negotiation Tactics, They’ll Blow Up Your Vending Business; How I’d Build A Vending Machine Business From $0.
  2. Write down:
  3. Indoor or outdoor
  4. Who can enter, and whether someone is accountable for theft
  5. Whether the space is premium and whether the property cares how the cabinet looks
  6. Roughly how many people use it
  7. Hours: work-from-home Fridays, 9-to-5 only, weekends, how many hours per week the machine will actually sell
  8. Whether revenue is still unproven
  9. Whether the account wants cash
  10. Whether the site needs extra physical protection

  14. If a luxury apartment rejects “old-school, big, bulky” machines, note that you need a smart cabinet that looks like an amenity. I Quit My Job, Then Started A $50k/Mo Vending Machine Business.
  15. If the site already has a bulky Coke/Pepsi machine that is rarely restocked, treat that as a replacement sale, not a reason to walk away. How To Start A Vending Machine Business Step-By-Step (With $0) says go after that share with a micro market or smart machine that offers more than Diet Coke or Snickers. He later said about 90% of his new locations already had old vending. Why You Shouldn't Start a Vending Business In 2025 (8 Aug 2025).
  16. If you are taking over an already-running open market, list both options: keep the open-market style, or buy AI machines. Judge on ROI, not novelty. Javier Zetter kept the open market after talking with other operators. He did not publish the ROI math.
  17. If a hotel already runs its own open lobby market and front-desk staff are ringing up low-dollar items while guests wait, Tom Canterino pitched locked vending as a staffed-checkout replacement to cut theft and free the desk.

3. Match the format to the location

Start with the location’s volume and type, not a favorite brand. Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine (7 Nov 2025): always start with the end location, not the brand. Putting the wrong machine in the right location is treated as just as bad as putting the right machine in the wrong location. Every Type Of Vending Machine You Can Own (Ranked).

  1. Pick the format from the environment, not from what you personally want to own. How to Start a Vending Business (with ZERO Experience) (7 Jul 2026).
  2. Use the matching table, then read the format definitions under it.
Environment Format the corpus points to
Traffic is outside (pool, athletic facility, hockey rink, YMCA entrance, outdoor employee area, sports complex, water park, hospital exterior) Traditional outdoor machine built for weather, humidity, and tougher conditions. You already have a weekly smart-cooler stop and the site wants sweets or has a microwave Add a frozen-food machine next to the cooler and restock it on the same visit. 1. If you can use a glass-front AI/smart machine, use it so people see multiple SKUs. Avoid traditional fronts that are mostly a Coke or Pepsi wall. Bright glass or a digital sign also helps the three-second visibility rule. Vending Machine Placements So Good, They Feel ILLEGAL.

Note

Traditional spiral machines still work in some places. Anthony describes the old flow: type a code, a coil turns, a bag drops. The product has to fit the machine, which caps what you can sell. Same Location... Double the Vending Revenue? (10 Apr 2026) later said traditional vending is not dead; it is capped. Same building, same people, same traffic: he attributed about $1,200 a month to the traditional machine and about $2,500 a month to the modern machine, with average tickets of about $2.50 versus $5 to $6. Those are his claimed figures, not a promise. Mike later attributed about a 3x sales drop for spiral tap-and-code versus an AI smart machine (19 Sep 2025). That is also his claim. Every Type Of Vending Machine You Can Own (Ranked).

What each format actually is

Traditional spiral / coil machine. Coins or crumbled bills, letter-number keypad, metal coils. Mix defaults to candy, soda, and chips. If it eats money, the customer is out of luck. You cannot stock detergent pods, Tylenol, premium snacks, or anything that does not fit the spiral. Same Location... Double the Vending Revenue?. You also cannot put a 12-ounce can in a column built for 20-ounce Gatorade, or vend Lunchables, salads, or sandwiches the way a smart machine can. Don't Start A Vending Machine Business, Until You Watch This.... Vends one motor-sized item per card tap and selection code (example: C4, then a second card tap for B19). Limited to what fits the motor (about a Snickers / Reese’s). Cash-holding traditional machines also create a theft and cash-reconciliation problem. The EASIEST Ways To Prevent Theft In Your Vending Business. Still the outdoor / vandalism-box option.

Traditional outdoor machine. Weather-capable cabinet for outdoor traffic. How to Start a Vending Business (with ZERO Experience).

Open micro market. Shelves, coolers, freezers, and a checkout kiosk. No motors or codes. Flexible enough for fresh food, bigger drinks, larger bags, medicine, protein, and convenience items. Shoppers pay by scanning items at the kiosk in the market Mike walked. Open shelving feels like a store and people buy multiple items. Downside is theft because there is no locked door. Required package in this corpus: cameras, visible “Smile, you’re on camera” signage, and at workplaces an HR / termination sign. Workplace sign text used on camera: “Theft will not be tolerated and can lead to termination.” Mike says businesses allow that HR sign nine times out of ten (19 Sep 2025). Vendor split in Mike’s recap: Cantaloupe for nicer matched aesthetics; 365 if the site does not care how it looks; MicroMart for locked doors plus digital screens.

Locked-door smart machine / smart cooler. Customer taps or swipes a card, the door unlocks, they take what they want, the machine tracks what left, the door closes, the card is charged. No barcode scan. How to Start a Vending Business (with ZERO Experience). Mike prefers cashless and Apple Pay, and AI cameras so customers grab several items without scanning UPCs. Once they swipe to open, they may grab extra items while the door is open. I Mind Control People With My Vending Machines, Here’s How. Mike describes four cameras inside plus one outside on the unit behind him (19 Sep 2025). He says onboard cameras plus locked doors cover most theft, and separately that an AI smart machine covers about 95% of theft anyway (19 Sep 2025). Doors stay locked if the card has only a small balance (his example: about $5 or $10). Every Type Of Vending Machine You Can Own (Ranked). Mike Hoffman says these machines place a $10 hold to open the door and that the hold should clear in a couple of hours (10 Oct 2025). Educate the site before install. Smart machine with digital screens. Same locked or glass-front unit plus screens for branding, motion, color, product display, and property logos. Used to justify a premium look. How to Start a Vending Business (with ZERO Experience); I Mind Control People With My Vending Machines, Here’s How.

Drink-only machine. Higher margins and no short shelf life, so you can stock more without expiry risk. How To Start A Vending Machine Business Step-By-Step (With $0).

Snack-only machine. Holds a lot of food. Do not lead with it. How To Start A Vending Machine Business Step-By-Step (With $0) says a bag of chips has a 90-day shelf life that starts when it arrives. Use snack-only as a second unit next to drinks if the site justifies two machines.

Freezer / freezer cooler. Needed for ice cream, frozen Uncrustables, hot pockets, pizza, hearty plant meals. These Vending Machine Items Make Me Over $20,000/Month said Häagen-Dazs will not handle well in a refrigerator-only unit. Anthony put Cheesecake Factory slices in a freezer location and said they sold well. Freezers are treated as a later add-on, not part of the first unproven buy.

Compact indoor machine. Anthony (13 Feb 2026) uses a 30-inch-wide compact example for tight lobbies, corners, walls, and nooks. Mike plans about 35 inches or less, except Stockwell. Measure the actual quote.

4. Write the capability list, then size the first buy

Minimum capabilities the recent operators keep repeating:

  1. Holds the mix that site needs: drinks, snacks, and — if the cabinet allows — incidentals and fresh food. Anthony’s Stockwell checklist: snacks, drinks, incidentals, fresh food. This Boring Machine Makes Me $1,000 Per Month, Here's How.
  2. Takes credit cards. Prefer Apple Pay and Google Pay as well. Cash-only used machines are called a revenue killer. This Boring Machine Makes Me $1,000 Per Month, Here's How; 10 HUGE Mistakes New Vending Machines Owners Make.
  3. Remote sales report and remote inventory from a phone. A facing can look full with one unit left; old machines without remote inventory are why Mike says airport vendors sit empty. How AI Vending Machines Trick You To Spend More.
  4. If it is a smart cooler / AI cabinet: cameras that track what is removed, door locked until payment is authorized, card charged when the door closes. Then size the cabinet to volume and risk, not to ego or to the pitch.

  1. Estimate how often one cabinet will empty. If you do not know yet, start smaller and add later rather than overspending on a low-traffic site. Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine.
  2. If revenue is unproven, buy one combo. Do not go all-in at Mike’s example of about $11,000 for a separate snack machine plus drink machine. How To Buy Vending Machines Online For CHEAP (Best Methods) (29 Jan 2025).
  3. If an office is only occupied 9 to 5 Monday through Thursday, do not buy a robust micro-market set. 10 HUGE Mistakes New Vending Machines Owners Make.
  4. If the site is a 700-unit apartment or similar, a more premium smart machine may be justified. How to Buy Your First Vending Machine (Step-by-Step Process) (24 Jul 2026).
  5. Treat the machine as movable. If the stop fails, pick it up and move it. Mallorie compared a $3,000 to $5,000 machine loss to a house you cannot move. Full-Time Job, Two Kids… Now It’s $4K/Month (21 Apr 2026).
  6. If one apartment machine needs restocking three to almost four times a week, add a second machine at that same property instead of living on that cadence. Angelina (19 Aug 2026).
  7. If a location is emptying so fast you are restocking daily, keep servicing it, then ask the property to add a larger cabinet. John Newcombe started the “Beast” on a Stockwell, restocked daily from October through February, then asked for a Pico widebody, moved the extra Stockwell to another stop, and stretched visits to every other day plus a Saturday touch-up.
  8. If you are deciding between three and four machines in a busy hotel and expect heavy sell-through, install the extra machine. Tom Canterino was glad he added the fourth because the team was restocking about every other day.
  9. If a micromarket has flattened, consider adding a freezer rather than only changing snacks. These Vending Machine Items Make Me Over $20,000/Month said one market sat around $17,000 a month without a freezer and went over $20,000 after adding one, about a 20% lift. That is one location’s story.
  10. If a purchased old-school route still has Pepsi/Coke motor machines, plan a later swap to a micro market or smart cooler so you can sell higher-ticket items those motors cannot vend. Using “Buy Now, Pay Later” To Buy A Vending Machine Business.
  11. Do not buy a placement-company package whose machines cost two to three times normal because the locations are “verified,” if you believe you can place machines yourself. He Risked Everything… Now It’s $20K/Month.
  12. High warehouse revenue figures in this corpus are often multi-machine, not one cabinet. Top 3 Vending Locations — These Are All You Need.
  13. Mike’s beginner protection rule: start with one machine only. Do not finance five cabinets that will sit in a garage. Prove one location, use those profits for the second, keep the nine-to-five until vending replaces that income. How ANYONE Can Buy Vending Machines For $0 Down. Anthony with about $10,000 saved: finance at 5% to 10% down, fill for $600 to $900, keep a reserve, and start with two to three machines (27 Feb 2026). Those are two different rules. See Conflicts.

Named cabinets that appear in the corpus:

  • Stockwell — common apartment starter; Mike Kaufman treats it as the width exception to his “typical refrigerator under 35 inches” assumption. Anthony’s Stockwell example: $8,000 / $170 a month. This Boring Machine Makes Me $1,000 Per Month, Here's How (2 Jan 2026).
  • Pico widebody — larger follow-on when a Stockwell cannot keep up. John Newcombe.
  • Pico V Plus — Michael Deese’s larger ambient replacement (8 deep vs Stockwell 6 deep). How He Built $600K/Year in Revenue With Just 18 Machines (24 Feb 2026).
  • 365 Pico Cooler / Pico Cooler Scan and Go 365Sandy installed one at a middle school. Mallorie moved a Pico Cooler Scan and Go 365 from a weak golf-simulator stop to a gym. Full-Time Job, Two Kids… Now It’s $4K/Month.
  • Haha ProManuel Duval ran one next to two cash-enabled machines at a manufacturing plant.
  • Haha Ultra — Manuel ordered one for a 300-unit office building with people on site 24/7. Not yet installed at interview time.
  • SandstarMike Kaufman calls it economically efficient: top screen and AI cameras at a more affordable cost. Tyrone Lewis later used Sandstar at 24/7 AMR placements.
  • 365 Retail — same video: many solutions, premium price; Mike will pay that when the location warrants it.
  • MicroMart / Cantaloupe — listed as manufacturers to research. Cantaloupe is also named as backend software. How to operate that software is Not specified in the corpus beyond “there is a learning curve.”
  • Naturals to Go coil machinesDJ Fuchs started there, still has some that generate coins, then wanted more manufacturers so he could match equipment to each site.
  • evending combo / Futura — Mike’s unproven-revenue / outdoor / cheap-tester example.
  • Stanstar bank — Mallorie’s planned 500-employee law office: all-beverage + cold-food cooler + ambient cooler.

Exact current prices, dimensions, and which San Diego dealer stocks which model are Not specified in the corpus.

5. Decide new versus used versus a whole route

Default (current repeated doctrine): buy new.

  1. Do not buy the first machine used off Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist to save about $1,500 versus several thousand for new, or about $2,000 in Mike Kaufman’s telling. How to Start a Vending Business (with ZERO Experience) (7 Jul 2026).
  2. Buy new so you know the condition and have warranty plus manufacturer support, a manual, and someone to call. How to Start a Vending Business (with ZERO Experience); Don't Start A Vending Machine Business, Until You Watch This...; 10 HUGE Mistakes New Vending Machines Owners Make.
  3. Prefer a longer warranty. Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine (7 Nov 2025) contrasts a 1-year warranty (when the compressor dies you may swap it, hire a tech, or buy another machine) with a 5-year warranty that swaps the compressor at no cost. Don't Start A Vending Machine Business, Until You Watch This... (17 Feb 2025) also tells beginners to get the five-year warranty.
  4. If a fridge dies or coolant runs out while warranty is active, have the stocker or GM call the manufacturer and get a tech at no cost. These “boring” machines make me $80k/mo, here's how. Anthony’s rule when a new machine breaks is to use the warranty. If You Have $10,000 Saved, Watch This Video.
  5. If you already own used machines, budget for unknown repairs. Refrigeration replacement can cost thousands and is not covered by a new-machine warranty. Don't Start A Vending Machine Business, Until You Watch This....
  6. After a location says yes, run this three-way check: cheap new machine with weaker backend software; more expensive scalable machine with better inventory software (Mike mentions tracking well at about 10 locations); or used from Craigslist / a marketplace. Weigh that against cash and how many sites you expect to add. Should You Build or Buy A Vending Machine Route?.

Warning

A used machine is treated like a used car: unknown history, unknown maintenance, possible failing refrigeration or card reader, seller may have dumped it before it became your problem. He paid $2,800–$3,000 thinking he was saving about $2,000; making it operable again was another about $2,000 in refrigeration parts; he expected it to break again. If you still look at used, do this vetting first (How To Buy Vending Machines Online For CHEAP (Best Methods); Why Starting Vending Solo Might Be a Mistake (And What to Do Instead)):

  1. Do not buy just because the price is low.
  2. Search Craigslist (or similar) in the for-sale section, filter for sale by owner, and skip kids-vending ads.
  3. Identify the exact model.
  4. Compare the used ask to the same model new (his live example: a used Futura combo at $5,000 and the same machine $5,000 new on evending.com, 29 Jan 2025). If the prices match, buy new.
  5. If the used unit is only about $1,500 cheaper than a new unit he estimated around $5,500–$6,000, treat the savings as possibly not worth it.
  6. Check the photo for a lit machine and a credit-card reader. A black plate where a reader could go, plus cash-only, is a downside.
  7. Before you visit, ask: how long have you had it, what has it done for sales, what repairs have you already done.
  8. Low historical sales can mean fewer “miles.”
  9. If you do not know what you are looking at, inspect for cooling problems, hard-to-find parts, and an outdated board that will not take modern payment systems.
  10. Price the real cost of a cheap cabinet after it is placed: lost sales, extra trips, and a manager who now sees a you problem, not just a machine problem.
  11. Only then schedule an in-person visit.
  12. Still do not buy until the destination location type is known.
  13. Payment-processor check on whatever you buy: reputable processor, fraud protection enabled, vendor keeps software updated, and you can see unusual card patterns. The EASIEST Ways To Prevent Theft In Your Vending Business.

Warning

Mike’s current personal rule is “do not buy used Craigslist as a first machine.” He also says everyone is different, and that used Craigslist is the option if you want to become the mechanic. Anthony’s later rule is “a good used machine is fine if you can vet cooling, parts, and modern payments.” Why Starting Vending Solo Might Be a Mistake (And What to Do Instead) (11 Aug 2026). Both stand. Do not collapse them into one rule.

Route purchase is a different asset than a single new cabinet. If that is the buy, skip to section 11.

6. Budget the full stack, then get the money ready

Have financing or cash ready before the property signs. Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine says waiting a week after they sign is a week of sales lost.

Mike Kaufman One room-sized micromarket cost him $15,675. He said he financed it with no money down. Opening inventory about $5,000–$6,000 versus about $300 to fill one normal vending machine. 14 Dec 2024

Mike Kaufman Ice machine upwards of $40,000 to $50,000. 19 Sep 2025

Warning

Those down-payment and “all-in” figures do not agree with each other, and they do not agree with the $15,675 micromarket example or Anthony’s $10,000 to $20,000 micromarket range. A locked smart cooler and a room-sized market are different assets. Anthony’s spoken “$3,000 to $5,000 to get started” is also lower than the high end of his own line items if you add them. Make More Money in 2026: Every Business Ranked (1 May 2026). Run the quote you actually get, not a blended YouTube number. Do not treat any of these as a San Diego quote.

Add the rest of the stack before you fall in love with a cabinet:

  1. Initial inventory. Attributed ranges: $250 to $500 (Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine); $300 to $500 depending on market size (How Much Does It REALLY Cost To Run A Vending Business?, 23 Apr 2025); $500 to $600 opening inventory per new machine (I Automated My Vending Machine Business So I Work Less Than 2HR/Week); $500 to $800 (The Best Strategy To Buy Your First Vending Machine In 2026, 20 Feb 2026); $600 to $900 (If You Have $10,000 Saved, Watch This Video, 27 Feb 2026); $700 to $900 (How To Replace Your Full Time Salary With Vending (Full Guide)); about $1,000 (Reasons You Shouldn't Start a Vending Business; Make More Money in 2026: Every Business Ranked, 1 May 2026). Keep first inventory controlled: enough to stock, test demand, and learn, then double down on what sells. Do not overbuy.
  2. Insurance. See section 9. Anthony also budgets $50 to $75 for the first month. The Best Strategy To Buy Your First Vending Machine In 2026.
  3. Setup, delivery, and installation. Whether install is included is a supplier question. A standard dollar amount is Not specified in the corpus.
  4. Small emergency / repair fund. How to Buy Your First Vending Machine (Step-by-Step Process). Mike’s per-machine reserve: $200 to $500.
  5. Monthly software / connectivity / card fees. Mike’s high-side stack on card-only AI micromarkets: software 2% to 5%, card fees about 5.9%, combined about 11% back to manufacturers, plus about $15/month data per machine or cheaper if you use property Wi‑Fi, plus a $50 to $75 one-time router turn-on or shipping fee if the machine does not include one. I Automated My Vending Machine Business So I Work Less Than 2HR/Week (20 Jun 2025). Elsewhere he lumped SaaS plus merchant fees around 8 to 10%. A micromarket kiosk in another talk charged 10% SAS and transaction fees. How Much Do Vending Machines ACTUALLY Make? (14 Dec 2024). Later he budgets about 5% card/merchant plus about 5% Wi-Fi/SaaS (10 Mar 2025). Anthony later stacks processing plus software at about 10% of revenue (20 Feb 2026). A traditional combo with no AI camera has “super small fees” because there are no SAS fees. One example smart-machine P&L uses about $50 a month (29 May 2025).
  6. Basic route gear if this is machine one: totes, wagons, storage. Anthony’s ranges: about $350, or $2 to $500.
  7. Before you accept any revenue number, subtract the full stack: COGS, card fees, revenue share, fuel, maintenance, and insurance. Top 5 Beginner Vending Mistakes (20 Mar 2026) used a $5,000 a month example that became $2,000 after those costs. He did not give the individual rates for card fees, revenue share, fuel, maintenance, or insurance in that video.
  8. In a separate walkthrough he also used 35% typical COGS, 5% as an industry-average revenue share when it applies, 8 to 9% merchant fees (then rounded to 10%), plus machine SaaS, plus labor of about two hours a week. His live math in that video is messy and he changes the percentages as he talks. Don't Start A Vending Machine Business, Until You Watch This... (17 Feb 2025). Hidden expenses beginners miss: revenue share, SaaS and merchant fees, and labor.

How to pay

Two paths: finance or cash. How to Buy Your First Vending Machine (Step-by-Step Process). Do this only after the contract is signed and the format is chosen.

If you finance (the repeated 2025–2026 default):

  1. Fill out the application in advance. Have your last two pay stubs ready, especially from a 9-to-5, plus business information, LLC details, and whatever else the financing partner asks for. Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine (7 Nov 2025); How to Buy Your First Vending Machine (Step-by-Step Process) (24 Jul 2026). He says if credit is good, approval is easier than people think.
  2. Have the LLC and EIN already in place if the lender wants them. How a California beginner should file: Not specified in the corpus.
  3. Treat the machine as income-producing collateral, not an expense. Finance an AI smart machine with a small down payment.
  4. Expect a basic credit or history check and proof of 9-to-5 income. Mike says complex business financials are not needed and decisions came back in 24 to 72 hours. A personal guarantee is usually still required. The machine is typically the collateral. Finance an AI smart machine with a small down payment (12 Sep 2025).
  5. Ask about down payment, first-payment delay, term, prepayment penalty, and whether the machine is the collateral.
  6. Anthony says about a 650 score should be fine; lower scores may still clear with higher rates and a higher down payment. Apply and treat a no as information. Mike says credit does not have to be perfect. Neither gives a named underwriter or a guaranteed cutoff. The Best Strategy To Buy Your First Vending Machine In 2026.
  7. Attributed down-payment and payment examples (not offers):
  8. Mike: as little as no money down, but in a lot of cases 10 to 15% ($600 on a $6,000 machine). How Much Does It REALLY Cost To Run A Vending Business? (23 Apr 2025).
  9. Mike: 10 to 20% typical; sometimes zero; do not count on zero in the then-current rate climate. Example 15% / $900 down on $6,000, about $150/month for 60 months, first payment 30 days after install. Shop 12% to 18% interest. Stretch to 72 or 84 months for payments “as low as $100,” or about $300/month if you want to crush principal. Finance an AI smart machine with a small down payment (12 Sep 2025).
  10. Same speaker, same $6,000 machine: he also said 15% down was $1,800 and totaled startup cash at $2,300 with $500 inventory. Why You Shouldn't Start a Vending Business In 2025. Fifteen percent of $6,000 is $900. Keep the intended lesson (optional down payment plus first fill), not the arithmetic.
  11. Use no money down if you need to preserve cash, as Mike did on machine one. Put about 15% down on later machines if you want to limit interest. Why You Shouldn't Start a Vending Business In 2025 (8 Aug 2025).
  12. Anthony: 5% to 10% down; $150 to $200 a month, combo on the high end. How To Replace Your Full Time Salary With Vending (Full Guide) (6 Feb 2026). On a $6,000 machine that is $300 to $600; on an $8,000 machine $400 to $800. He also budgets $300 to $800 down depending on the machine. The Best Strategy To Buy Your First Vending Machine In 2026 (20 Feb 2026); If You Have $10,000 Saved, Watch This Video (27 Feb 2026).
  13. Anthony’s combo quote: $150 to $175 a month over 60 months; smart cooler $150 to $225 over 60 months (20 Feb 2026). He separately cites financing “as low as 0%” and about $170 a month over 16 months (26 Dec 2025).
  14. Anthony’s Stockwell: 60 months at $170 a month on an $8,000 machine. This Boring Machine Makes Me $1,000 Per Month, Here's How (2 Jan 2026).
  15. Mike Hoffman’s first machine: no money down, 60 months, first payment 90 days after install, payment $112. I Quit My Job, Then Started A $50k/Mo Vending Machine Business (6 Jan 2025).
  16. Mike’s first evending.com / Iowa outdoor machine: zero down, 60 months, first payment 90 days after delivery / after sales started, $112 or $117 depending on the telling. Those were his deals at the time, not a current rate sheet.
  17. Named financing sources in the corpus: evending.com (Mike says they will finance even without an LLC after a credit/history check, 48 or 60 months, five-year parts warranty); VendHub or VendingConnect.com; 365 and Cantaloupe (terms vary with how much you have already bought from them); MicroMart publicly had no in-house financing because it was new. Anthony’s VenHub sequence: browse smart coolers / combos / outdoor / micromarkets, check listed dimensions against the contracted space, apply for financing, submit the basic info for a credit check, review the monthly options if approved, then schedule installation. He said VenHub was members-first and “should open to the public sometime this year” (20 Feb 2026). Public access status after that date is Not specified in the corpus. Current approval rules for a San Diego beginner are Not specified in the corpus.
  18. After approval, set the delivery address to the location, not your house. A machine in a garage depreciates and makes no money. Should You Build or Buy A Vending Machine Route?.
  19. After the machine is cash-flowing, apply leftover profit to principal. Mike’s preferred payoff: 60-month paper, dead in 18 months; elsewhere 12 to 24 months; elsewhere 4 to 5× faster than scheduled if the stop is strong. Anthony and Mike both aim to retire 48- to 60-month notes in about 12 to 18 months from cash flow. Mike also cites payoffs in less than a year in the fastest cases, after which a $115 to $175 payment disappears (12 Jun 2025). Ask whether the lender waives prepayment penalties. 10 HUGE Mistakes New Vending Machines Owners Make (5 Jul 2025); Finance an AI smart machine with a small down payment.
  20. Lease-to-own is a separate path Mike describes: lower monthly payment, term often includes maintenance and warranties, buyout $1 at the end (his example: $7,000 smart cooler, $180/month for 48 months). Use this, in his 12 Sep 2025 telling, if you want the lowest monthly payment, included maintenance/warranty, cash left for inventory, or the option to upgrade to newer AI later. Confirm that on the actual contract. Those tax comments are his; they are not a California filing instruction. Joe also describes leasing traditional machines over five years, and later leasing through VendHub / “modern amenities.” How This Retiree Built 15+ Vending Locations ($5500/month).
  21. Some operators put inventory and small equipment on a 0% intro-APR card for 12 to 24 months and keep the points. Mike (12 Sep 2025): apply for business cards with 0% APR for 12 to 24 months, look for $5,000 to $10,000 limits even with average credit, buy the machine, pay it off from profits inside the window, stack cards if one limit is short. Approvals and limits are his claims. He is not naming a card company. Anthony’s start, as told by Mike (14 Nov 2025): buy the first machines and supplies on personal cards with 0% for the first 12 months, get them producing, then use that revenue to qualify for equipment financing. If a new business card limit is too small, Stephen Lee says you may put business charges on a personal card at the beginning if you download statements and track every charge. Stop depending on the personal card once the business is established. Anthony’s example was a $5,000 Chase business card versus a $20,000 personal card (19 Dec 2025). The Tax Strategy Most Vending Machine Owners Get Wrong.
  22. Do not use consumer buy-now-pay-later on a depreciating toy. He is only in favor of leverage on a cash-flowing route or machine that can pay the note. Using “Buy Now, Pay Later” To Buy A Vending Machine Business (1 Aug 2025). Do not pick a cabinet only because this week’s interest rate is 15% instead of 8% or 5%. 23. John Newcombe split weekly deposits into Profit First accounts and reinvested until machines were paid off. He had not taken personal draws.
  24. Mike Kaufman tells people with a job not to quit: land locations, reinvest 100% of profits in months 4–6, repeat.
  25. Capital partner path: find someone with capital and no time. They buy the machine; you operate. Mike’s split is 50/50 after expenses. You put in no cash for the cabinet, only sweat. “Many successful operators have started this way” is his claim, not a named case study. If a premium property will buy the equipment, you operate and maintain it and split revenue with the owner. The split percentage is Not specified in the corpus. 1. Know the full budget before you shop: machine, inventory, insurance, setup, delivery/install, emergency fund. How to Buy Your First Vending Machine (Step-by-Step Process).
  2. Current doctrine still says do not do this if it straps you. Mike says paying his first machine in full left him unable to scale. Anthony later wished he had financed the first machines and hoarded cash for a stocker and down payments; paying cash blocked hiring. 10 HUGE Mistakes New Vending Machines Owners Make; How He Built a $102K/Month Vending Business With 45 Locations. Anthony argues against saving a year to pay cash because that is a year of no revenue.

7. Shop more than one supplier

Do not talk to only one company and get sold. DJ Fuchs (23 Dec 2025) and his wife only talked to Naturals to Go after a broker email. He still calls that company a good trainer, but he later wanted more than one or two machine types.

  1. Start from the location’s volume and type.
  2. Reach out to multiple verified manufacturers. Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine names Sandstar, 365 Retail, MicroMart, and Cantaloupe as a research set. He says do not get hung up on brand; the named brands all have good points. Also named elsewhere: eVending, Haha, VenHub, AVS, Naturals to Go.
  3. Do background research / a SWOT on each.
  4. Ask every supplier, besides price (How to Buy Your First Vending Machine (Step-by-Step Process), 24 Jul 2026; Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine):
  5. What is the warranty on this machine?
  6. What does the warranty actually cover?
  7. What is your delivery time frame?
  8. Is installation included in delivery, and how much does it cost?
  9. What happens if the machine is damaged during delivery, and do you have backups they can ship immediately?
  10. What are the monthly software or connectivity costs?
  11. How does support work after purchase?
  12. How quickly can I get replacement parts?
  13. Ask whether a card reader is already installed on a traditional combo.
  14. Ask whether a cellular router is included or is a $50 to $75 extra.
  15. Ask how you get a first-install bring-list for that exact model. Jesse asked a Haha ambassador for the written setup sequence and packed a wire cutter for zip ties; he said that list saved him an hour to an hour and a half of missing tools in front of a property manager. The actual list is not in the video. What His First 30 Days in Vending Really Looked Like.

Source’s use Named gear When they use it
Mike Kaufman evending combo / Futura Unproven revenue, outdoor, cheap tester, no money down, 5-year parts warranty, no AI SAS fees
Mike Kaufman Cantaloupe open-market set Open market where shelving, logos, and kiosk checkout journey matter
Mike Kaufman 365 Stockwell Property cares about looks but wants a locked-machine vibe
Mike Kaufman 365 micromarket Smaller site that does not care about shelving colors
Mike Kaufman MicroMart On-screen video, property logos, clinic ads, food-space app/UI; he said those video abilities were not available with 365 or Cantaloupe at the time. Locked market feel, ad screens, expandable to a three-cabinet set
Anthony / Michael Deese / Tyrone Stockwell Apartment combo that holds snacks, drinks, incidentals, fresh food; AI cameras; $8,000 / $170/month example
Michael Deese Pico V Plus ambient Larger replacement when a Stockwell sells through (8 deep vs 6 deep)
Mallorie Rauch Pico Cooler Scan and Go 365 Smart cooler she moved from a weak golf-simulator stop to a gym

8. Do the technical site check before the machine ships

Do this after placement is agreed and before, or immediately after, you order. Measure on the first visit, then measure again after you order. Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine (7 Nov 2025); How to Buy Your First Vending Machine (Step-by-Step Process) (24 Jul 2026). He has seen people take one wrong first measurement, order, and then the machine does not fit.

  1. Measure entrance, doorway, hallway, elevator, turns, final placement area, and space behind the machine. Measure width, height, and depth.
  2. Measure every doorway from the outdoor drop-off point to the final spot.
  3. Check elevator fit, or plan stairs. Check that each door opens far enough.
  4. Use Mike’s standard envelope unless it is a Stockwell: about 75 inches high, 35 inches wide or smaller, and about 30 to 35 inches deep. Anthony pitches 30 inches wide for compact indoor units. Measure the actual quote.
  5. Plan at least a 6-inch gap off the wall so the compressor can ventilate. Never push the machine flush or you can burn out the compressor. Leave ventilation / breathing room behind a refrigerated machine.
  6. Confirm a 110-volt outlet at the spot. He says these smart machines use the same kind of outlet as a laptop charger. Confirm it works, is not on a switch or automatic shutoff, and that the machine can reach it safely.
  7. Plan to plug into a surge-protection cord / power strip, not directly into the wall.
  8. Check that the outlet has no automatic shutoff that could cut power when the machine surges. An auto-shutoff can kill refrigeration and spoil fresh items or leave you with warm drinks.
  9. Decide how the smart machine gets internet before delivery day:
  10. Onboard / your own cellular router plus a monthly data fee if you want control and do not want to depend on the property. Mike uses WTI routers a lot and does not want smart machines on property Wi‑Fi.
  11. Property Wi‑Fi if you want to save a few dollars a month, knowing a property outage, password change, or weak signal takes your machine offline and you lose sales. Do not show up asking for the password.
  12. For a 365 / Stockwell-style planogram, save product photos as JPEGs, not PNGs. PNG files would not upload on Anthony’s install.

Note

The machines look power-hungry, but Mike Kaufman says smart machines can sleep, so compressors are not drawing hard all day, and they still only need 110V. Smart machines need internet to take sales; if they are not connected, you are not taking sales.

How to size a San Diego cellular plan, which carriers work in which buildings, and exact outlet amperage beyond “110 volt” are Not specified in the corpus.

9. Put insurance in force before delivery

Most properties will not let the machine on site without proof. Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine.

  1. Expect most properties to require general liability. How to Start a Vending Business (with ZERO Experience).
  2. Ask whether they also want auto or commercial auto.
  3. Ask specifically about inland marine. That is coverage for movable items, which is why it fits a machine sitting at a location. Anthony and Mike both name it. Mike later calls inland marine the most important coverage as it relates to the cabinets. How To Legally Protect Yourself As A Vending Owner (28 Nov 2025).
  4. Mike Hoffman says start with typical general liability, then add “marine layer” when the first machine goes out, especially at an apartment. He says general liability will not cover a break-in/theft of that machine.
  5. Mike Kaufman also says look into product liability (customer reaction or expired-product claims) and confirm property-damage coverage is inside GL or add it separately. He starts around a $1 million liability policy, with an umbrella in the $1 million to $2 million range depending on route size, then increase later.
  6. When talking to brokers, insist you are in the vending niche, not food service, so the policy is not priced as food service. He says some brokers may not understand vending. He names Next, Hartford, and Progressive as places people look.
  7. Shop multiple quotes. Understand what is actually covered if somebody damages a $6,000 or $7,000 machine. Confirm inland marine covers vandalism to the cabinet (Mike’s example: a destroyed $10,000 machine). Anthony says vandalism is an insurance claim.
  8. List machine count and revenue on the insurance application so the carrier can price it. How To Legally Protect Yourself As A Vending Owner.
  9. Once the policy is in force, issue a certificate of insurance (COI) that lists the property address and property information. Add the property as additionally insured.
  10. Give the property the named COI before the machine is allowed on site.

Insurance cost figures in this batch conflict. Mike Kaufman first says about $100 to $200 to set up plus about $15 a month, then later says $100 to $200 a month for that machine. In another video he cites about $20 a month for one machine, or GL “like $20 a month,” falling toward $1 or $2 per machine as the route grows. Mike Hoffman thinks they pay $20 or $30 a month for all of their insurance. Anthony budgets $50 to $75 for the first month. Do not treat any of those as a San Diego quote.

10. Place the order, control delivery, and lock payments/software with the cabinet

  1. Order the matched machine, not the one you liked first on a website.
  2. Get an order number when you place the order so you can track the timeline yourself. Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine says machine companies are terrible at logistics and do not behave like Amazon unless you force an order number.
  3. Tell the property the lead time you were quoted. Mike’s spoken range is 10 days to six weeks after a signed contract. How To Negotiate Vending Machine Deals Like A PRO (26 Sep 2025). Tim Barnes says equipment often takes about 30 days after the order (7 Apr 2026). Use that gap. From Out of Work to $90K/Month.
  4. Confirm the delivery window rather than waiting passively.
  5. When the regional carrier calls and says the machine will arrive in the next 72 hours, ask to be first off the truck the next morning.
  6. Ask how they will notify you. Push for a text or call from the actual driver, not only dispatch.
  7. Block a full day for unwrap, inspect, stock, and planogram. Block more than a two-hour delivery window.
  8. Bring a surge-protecting power strip, a level, a hammer, and a large socket set. Manufacturers bolt or crate machines to pallets differently. If this is a Haha or similar first install, pack the ambassador bring-list, including a wire cutter.
  9. Bring cash. If the driver is only required to drop at the curb, ask and tip to move it closer on the pallet jack. How to Buy Your First Vending Machine (Step-by-Step Process).
  10. Bring the entire first inventory. Stock the same day. Do not leave the machine empty overnight.
  11. Do not sign the delivery paperwork until the machine is unwrapped and inspected. If the driver is in a hurry, refuse an on-site signature and ask them to email the paperwork after you unwrap, power on, check for scratches/dents, and verify the AI cameras and interior are not broken. If you sign first and find damage later, Anthony says it is much harder to prove what happened.

Use this if the driver wants a signature first (Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine):

Hey, I'm not signing any paperwork. You can send it over to me via email for a signature, but I need to unwrap this and actually test the machine, make sure it turns on, make sure there's no scratches or dents, make sure nothing's broken inside with the AI cameras.

Inspect, in order:

  1. Unwrap if possible.
  2. Check for dents.
  3. Check for scratches.
  4. Check that the door opens.
  5. Check that nothing obvious is broken, including AI cameras and interior.
  6. Power on.
  7. Take photos and video.
  8. Then sign.

Decide payments and software with the cabinet, not after

The payment hardware is part of the machine purchase.

  1. Prefer cashless (credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay) if you want less friction and higher spend. I Mind Control People With My Vending Machines, Here’s How; Use These Negotiation Tactics, They’ll Blow Up Your Vending Business.
  2. On AI coolers, have the card unlock the door so opening the machine is already a commitment, then charge every item removed to that card. Why You Shouldn't Start a Vending Business In 2025.
  3. If you still want cash at a manufacturing plant, that is what Manuel Duval did: two cash-enabled machines plus one Haha Pro. He did not name the cash-enabled brand or say whether those two also take cards.
  4. Budget for machine SaaS plus merchant fees before you buy the cabinet that requires them.
  5. If you end up on more than one software platform, you will have to compile reports yourself to know route-wide winners. DJ Fuchs was in four softwares at once. Lane said they had four different systems and did not name them. Mallorie had five backends and called it crazy. Jason inherited six systems.
  6. After stocking, make the back-end planogram match what is physically in the machine so AI cameras are not confused. If you substituted Lay’s for Doritos, update the planogram. Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine.

Which processor, monthly SaaS dollar amount, and cellular-data fee a San Diego beginner should pick: Not specified in the corpus.

After you order, before the truck

  1. Visit the site again. Survey employees or residents on products and prices. Match mix to the workforce. Reacting to Codie Sanchez’s Vending Business Advice.
  2. If it is a smart cooler, explain the door-authorization hold before install (Mike Hoffman: $10 hold, a couple of hours, 10 Oct 2025).
  3. Reconfirm doorway, clearance, and outlet against the ordered specs.
  4. Have insurance ready and the COI issued.
  5. Keep digital copies of the purchase documents, card statements, and later 1099-Ks. Stephen Lee: download statements each February/March into a cloud year folder. The Tax Strategy Most Vending Machine Owners Get Wrong.

11. If you are buying a route instead of one new machine

This is a different purchase than a single new cabinet.

  1. Search Biz Buy Sell, Facebook Marketplace, other business marketplaces, common business brokers, and any routes-for-sale boards you can find. Using “Buy Now, Pay Later” To Buy A Vending Machine Business; How He Scaled to 500+ Vending Machines by Buying Routes.
  2. For off-market deals, search Google Maps for “vending,” then email or call owners and ask if they would sell.
  3. Pull monthly revenue, location count, machine types and age, and why the seller is leaving. These “boring” machines make me $80k/mo, here's how.
  4. Get their numbers. Run the calculations yourself. Walk away if the numbers and the feel do not add up. Manuel Duval (17 Feb 2026) also looked at franchise offerings. He did not share the actual broker or franchise numbers he saw.
  5. Judge revenue per location, not vanity revenue per machine, when there are only a few stops. Calculate machine count per stop, whether you can raise prices, and whether you can swap to newer machines or a micromarket. Check whether soda equipment is limited to 12-ounce cans.
  6. Screen listings around 0.7x to 1x of total/annual revenue. Mike’s comfort rule is 1x or less; he walks if the ask is above 1x. He first says 0.7x–1x of “total revenue,” then illustrates with 10–12 months and later calls it a yearly multiple. Example: a $2,000/month location ≈ $24,000. That is his rule of thumb, not an appraisal. Should You Build or Buy A Vending Machine Route?; Using “Buy Now, Pay Later” To Buy A Vending Machine Business.
  7. Mr. Passive was comfortable paying 1x trailing revenue ($96,000 on $8,000/month across four locations) because the machines were new and already doing about $2,000 per stop (11 Jul 2025). Structure on that deal: $48,000 down, $48,000 over 48 months at 3%, about $1,000 to $1,030 a month. He said he was in no rush to prepay that cheap note. That conflicts with his other advice to pay manufacturer notes off in 12 to 24 months. That is his deal, not a market rule.
  8. Confirm seller financing, whether the machines are still under warranty, and whether the business is owner-centric. Once a seller is open, ask whether they will hold paper instead of you borrowing from a bank to pay them in full. Creative structure Mike used: offer 10%, 20%, or 30% down and seller-finance the balance over about five years. His Midwest example was 10% down and five years. Weak or missing contracts become leverage (lower price and/or payments tied to those clients staying).
  9. Jesse’s drink-route buy: bank would not finance; seller held paper interest-free for five years; Jesse called stumbling onto that luck, not something others should assume they can copy. He had buyer’s remorse immediately after taking the note. What His First 30 Days in Vending Really Looked Like (16 Dec 2025).
  10. If you will keep the seller’s machines: ask age, whether they work, and whether spare parts exist, then estimate remaining life. If you will pull them for smart machines / micromarkets, treat age as a smaller risk.
  11. Go under LOI. Have a CPA review the books. Inspect the machines. Review property contracts.
  12. Knock broken machines off the price. If a location is only a handshake, argue it is worth less.
  13. Keep the seller involved long enough to introduce you at each account. Using “Buy Now, Pay Later” To Buy A Vending Machine Business warns that if you cash the owner out completely and the route was owner-dependent, it can fall apart.
  14. After close, expect hidden pricing, mix, and labor habits. Newer smart machines let you see inventory on a phone; old machines with no card readers require a visit to count product in the motors. Buying a route can include 20-year-old machines, CoinMax / bill-validator rebuilds, and a 103-item warehouse checklist whose items are not listed on camera. How He Scaled to 500+ Vending Machines by Buying Routes.

Nuance and exceptions

  • The machine is not the profit engine. Anthony’s gap between a $700/month machine and $4,000/month machines is the location, not the hardware. Best machine, products, and service still fail without foot traffic. Wrong placement inside the building can cut sales 25%, in his telling. • Practice machines are allowed if you have other income. Jesse placed small office machines (~35–45 people) through family to learn stocking and setup before apartment pitches, while food-truck income floated them. What His First 30 Days in Vending Really Looked Like.
  • A cheaper combo can be a teaching tool. Mike used a no-money-down combo at an apartment that did not care about looks so he could learn without jumping into AI cameras, planograms, and backend software. How To Buy Vending Machines Online For CHEAP (Best Methods).
  • Smart cabinets change what you can sell. Coil fit stops mattering; shelf fit and camera mapping start mattering. Larger packs can raise ticket and free slots. • Freezers are a later add-on, not part of the first unproven buy. Mr. Passive added freezers in months 4–6 of a route takeover; John Sanchez planned a freezer after a student-housing stop had already done well over $4,000 in a month.
  • Multiple backends are common and painful. Plan for software sprawl if you mix brands.
  • Mike Hoffman got the location yes before he knew where to buy a machine. That is recorded as a warning, not a method. I Quit My Job, Then Started A $50k/Mo Vending Machine Business.
  • Spending all the upfront money on a new machine or micromarket and then getting booted after 90 days is the risk a clawback clause is meant to hedge. The BEST Contract To Use For Your Vending Business. His example: micromarket at an urgent care on a three-year contract; three months later a new manager does not want it.
  • First inventory for a single machine and first inventory for a room-sized market are not the same job. Mike used $5,000–$6,000 to open one market and about $300 to fill one normal machine. Anthony budgets around $1,000, or $500 to $800, or $600 to $900, depending on the video.
  • Javier Zetter needed all the shelf pushers for a hotel open market; they arrived on different dates and forced fridge resets in stages. A large open market is a 100–150 SKU project, not a coil-machine fill.
  • Madison kept spare machines in a rented storage unit, but not melt-prone product because of heat.

  • Tim Barnes added high-quality self-checkout micromarkets after about six months of regular machines. He said they are pricier, so judge ROI not just sales. His best later markets were around $14,000 a month (7 Apr 2026). He does not claim micromarkets are always best. From Out of Work to $90K/Month.

Depreciation when you buy (tax planning, not a DIY filing kit)

Stephen Lee (19 Dec 2025), discussing the bill they called OB3:

  1. Treat depreciation as the large operator deduction. Machines can be written off now or spread over five years.
  2. Section 179: cherry-pick which machines get a 100% write-off; it cannot take the deduction past zero.
  3. Bonus depreciation: also 100%, but can take taxable income negative and report a loss.
  4. New 100% 179 / bonus treatment, in his telling, applies to 2025 purchases after 19 Jan 2025. Equipment bought earlier than 20 Jan 2025 stays on the old rules. He did not give Anthony a way to pull 2023–2024 equipment under the new 100% rules.
  5. Do not automatically zero the return if you or a spouse may need a mortgage or business financing in the next two to three years. Banks may add depreciation back, but he said they still want to see some tax paid.
  6. Mike’s simpler 12 Sep 2025 line is that a $6,000 machine can be 100% depreciated. That is his framing. Stephen’s later rules and lender-optics warning sit on top of it.

Caveats

  • Claimed monthly revenues and profits in the source videos are attributed anecdotes. They are not a forecast for a first San Diego machine. Figures attached to specific machines in this batch (Manuel’s plant on track for about $8,000 with three machines, Mike’s micromarket claims of $15,000–$25,000, Anthony’s $1,200 → $2,500 swap, Tom’s hotel, Lane’s $3,000–$4,000 one-machine apartment, Tim’s $14,000 markets) are anecdotal and unverified.
  • Anthony’s Stockwell P&L ($2,300 revenue, $170 financing, about $1,040 net) has internal math that does not fully reconcile in the transcript (spoken fee $2.62 versus a $262 figure that fits the subtraction). This Boring Machine Makes Me $1,000 Per Month, Here's How (2 Jan 2026).
  • Mike’s $6,000 machine / $1,500 a month / ~$150 payment example (12 Sep 2025) and Anthony’s $2,000 revenue / ~$150 payment / $680–$850 net examples (Feb 2026) are illustrations. They are not San Diego quotes.
  • Mike claims financing lets a beginner test with “zero risk” because 30 days of revenue arrive before the first payment. You still owe the lender, the personal guarantee, inventory, insurance, and the location relationship if the site fails.
  • “Suppliers offer financing because they want to move inventory and they earn on the machine and the loan” is Mike’s explanation of lender motivation, not a reason to skip reading the contract.
  • Lead times, warranty length, and “no money down” are described as what those operators got, not as a standing public offer.
  • Smart-machine software, cameras, and card fees are a permanent operating cost. Budget them before you buy the cabinet that requires them. Exact software, SIM, and processor contracts that ship with each brand are Not specified in the corpus.
  • Right machine, wrong environment is a real failure mode. An open market in a public apartment lobby at 2 a.m. is the example Anthony uses.
  • Same location with the wrong machine or wrong planogram underperforms. Start a Vending Business in 90 Days | Complete Roadmap. Anthony has shown up to pitch a specific machine and ownership would not even approve it. That is another reason not to buy first.
  • A high-crime site may be uninsurable.

Conflicts the corpus does not resolve

Warning

Keep both sides. Do not average them into fake certainty. Use the rule that matches your cash, credit, and site.

Traditional machines are still usable vs traditional machines are the thing you are replacing. Anthony says traditional can still work in some places and later said traditional is not dead; it is capped. Why You Shouldn't Start a Vending Business In 2025 calls traditional vending saturated and dying (giant lobby eyesores, 12-ounce cans, cash only) and tells people not to lead with the word “vending.” 10 HUGE Mistakes New Vending Machines Owners Make (5 Jul 2025): traditional cash/code/motor vending is almost dead; get on board with micro markets and smart coolers or be left behind. He bets traditional is gone in the next two years. The same Mike video: do not install a fancy micro market in a 9-to-5 Thursday office; start with one combo. Tom Canterino started traditional and quickly moved to smart. DJ Fuchs still runs some coil machines that generate coins, but says high-end residential, manufacturing, and hospitals often want newer tech. Jason is still running a mostly traditional 500-plus machine route and delaying smart upgrades until product and price work is done; when he does smart, he expects to buy about 10 at once for property-management portfolios. Joe runs a mixed fleet. Mike Kaufman still specifies traditional outdoor cabinets and a bulky metal box for vandalism concern. Mike Hoffman (10 Oct 2025) never recommends old-school / 1980s machines and says leading with them sets you up for failure. Both views stay on the page: outdoor traditional is still in Kaufman’s kit; Hoffman wants AI smart machines with their own routers indoors.

Manufacturing wants cheap-and-working vs manufacturing gets smart machines. She’s Doing $10-12K a Month With Just 6 Vending Locations says blue-collar plants do not need fancy machines or logos. Anthony, in that same conversation, still planned a freezer and smart machines for a neglected 24/5 three-shift plant. Manuel Duval runs a mix: one Haha Pro plus two cash-enabled machines at his highest plant.

Cashless-only vs keep cash. John Newcombe and I Mind Control People With My Vending Machines, Here’s How push cashless / Apple Pay / card-unlock. Manuel’s best stop still uses two cash-enabled machines. Mallorie placed traditional because an office wanted cash. The corpus does not say whether Manuel’s cash machines also take cards.

Open market vs locked smart vs “replace the hotel market with vending.” Anthony allows open markets in controlled workplaces. Javier Zetter kept an open hotel market on ROI. Tom Canterino replaced a hotel’s self-run open lobby market with four vending machines because of theft and front-desk load. Why You Shouldn't Start a Vending Business In 2025 will run an open market in a fob-access room with a camera and a property fine, and otherwise prefers locked coolers. Later airport/smart-cooler talk: they do not do a lot of open markets in locations they are worried about theft. How AI Vending Machines Trick You To Spend More. Mr. Passive claims locked-until-paid plus cameras is “zero theft.” Treat that as his claim, not a measured result. Choose based on site control, not on which video you watched last.

Default first machine when revenue is unknown. Older How To Start A Vending Machine Business Step-By-Step (With $0) (26 Dec 2024) default is a combo MicroMart. Later How to Start a Vending Business (with ZERO Experience) (7 Jul 2026) default is environment-first matching, with locked smart as the public-access answer. The Best Strategy To Buy Your First Vending Machine In 2026 (20 Feb 2026) has both in one video: combo if you are testing drinks and snacks or the space is small; smart cooler if you are simply unsure and want a lower-cost versatile start.

One machine vs two or three. Mike (12 Sep 2025): one machine only, then profits fund the next. Anthony (27 Feb 2026): $10,000 can start two to three financed machines if you leave a reserve. He later models adding a third around month six and fourth/fifth by month 12. He also says that by month six you should be aiming at about three or five quality locations that can do at least about $1,500 a month, without forcing weak sites (26 Dec 2025).

How much cash you need / down payment / starter budget. See the cost table in section 6. Zero down, 5–10%, 10–15%, 10–20%, and 15% all appear, sometimes from the same speaker in different months. Machine prices in this batch span roughly $2,000–$4,000, $3,000–$9,000, $8,000, and a $10,000 pitch figure. Inventory fill figures span $250–$500, $300–$500, $500–$600, $500–$800, $600–$900, $700–$900, and $1,000. Anthony (26 Jun 2026) says a few thousand all-in and $500 to $1,000 down. Two months later he says five to a thousand dollars down and $3,000 to $5,000 all-in. Mike wants $6,000 to $10,000 sitting ready, or a financing file. His own first deal was $0 down on a $6,000 machine. A micromarket at $15,675 plus $5,000–$6,000 inventory is a different scale. None of the financing structures is a guaranteed offer.

Pay notes off fast vs keep cheap paper. Why You Shouldn't Start a Vending Business In 2025 wants manufacturer notes paid in 12 to 24 months. The same operator, on a 3% seller-financed route, said do not rush to prepay. Using “Buy Now, Pay Later” To Buy A Vending Machine Business. Different object (seller note vs equipment loan), both are financing advice.

Finance vs pay cash. Mike (5 Jul 2025): do not pay full price in cash in 2025. Anthony: finance 5–10% down; later said paying cash for the first machines was a scaling mistake. Mike also: he will never tell anyone they should take on debt. Joe: if you do not buy outright and the location is bad, you may not make enough to pay for the machine. The corpus does not give a worked case for an operator who prefers to own free-and-clear from day one.

Buy new vs buy used / buy a route. Mike Kaufman, repeatedly through 1 Jul 2026: do not buy used, especially Craigslist. You may become a mechanic, lose the warranty, and buy new anyway. He also says multiple operators like fixing used machines; he does not want that path. Anthony (11 Aug 2026): a good used machine is fine if you can vet it; a cheap unknown one gets expensive. Mallorie bought two traditional machines on Facebook Marketplace first, paid storage, then later stated “you do not buy the machine first.” Jesse bought an 18-drink-machine neglected route with seller paper. Jason scaled past 500 machines by buying old traditional routes and harvesting dead cabinets for parts. Mr. Passive bought a four-location new micromarket route at 1x revenue. Those are acquisition paths, not a beginner single-cabinet path.

Entity first vs location first vs machine first. Mike: formally get the business structure right first; do not start by buying the first machine. How To Legally Protect Yourself As A Vending Owner. Anthony / Mike / Mallorie / Joe / Angelina: do not buy the machine before the location. Mike Hoffman: got the yes, then went to find a machine.

How much insurance costs, and how much to buy on day one. Mike Hoffman starts with ordinary GL only and adds marine when the first machine goes out; he does not want a pile of extra policies yet. Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine wants GL, umbrella, product liability, property damage, and inland marine before delivery. Dollar figures conflict (see section 9).

Micromarket price. Why You Shouldn't Start a Vending Business In 2025 (8 Aug 2025) groups “smart machines and micro markets” in a $4,000 to $6,000 band. How Much Do Vending Machines ACTUALLY Make? (14 Dec 2024) paid $15,675 for a two-cooler, three-shelf, one-kiosk market that “takes up an entire room.” Anthony quotes $10,000 to $20,000. Shannon recalls $10,000 to $12,000. Those cannot all describe the same asset.

Compact width. Anthony pitches 30 inches wide. Everything You Need To Purchase Your First Vending Machine plans about 35 inches or less, except Stockwell. Measure the actual quote.

Location vs machine. Mike (12 Jun 2025): location and foot traffic matter more than how nice the machine is. Mike (19 Sep 2025): the wrong machine in the right location is just as bad as the reverse. Anthony also says blame the location, not the machine, when one stop does $700 and another does $4,000. Read them together: win the site first, then still match the cabinet.

Business cards vs personal cards. Mike teaches 0% business cards. Anthony’s origin story used 0% personal cards, then graduated to equipment financing. Stephen Lee allows personal-card spend only as a tracked startup bridge.

Where to buy. Mike’s first Google result was evending.com (Iowa). Anthony’s 2026 shopping path is VenHub first for members. He also names eVending, MicroMart, and 365 for financing. There is no single mandated vendor in this batch.

Depreciation aggressiveness. Mike presents 100% write-off of a $6,000 machine as a “double win.” Stephen Lee (19 Dec 2025) says maxing to zero or a loss can hurt later lending and that 2025 100% rules only cover purchases after 19 Jan 2025.

Does the machine even matter? Current buy doctrine spends a lot of time on smart vs traditional. Anthony also says blame the location, not the machine, when results diverge.
